Background of the study

Government policies play a crucial role in shaping the economic landscape and cultural industries. In Kano State, traditional craft industries are significant sources of cultural heritage and livelihood for many artisans. These industries, which include textile weaving, pottery, and woodworking, face challenges in maintaining competitiveness amid modern manufacturing techniques and global market pressures. Government interventions through policies, subsidies, and capacity-building programs have the potential to revitalize traditional crafts and promote sustainable economic growth (Abdullahi, 2023). However, the effectiveness of these policies remains a topic of debate. Some policies have led to improved market access and artisan skills, while others have failed to address critical issues such as technology transfer, infrastructure, and market integration. The evolving policy landscape necessitates an evaluation of how government initiatives impact the sustainability and competitiveness of traditional craft industries. This study examines the effect of government policies on traditional craft industries in Kano State, evaluating both the economic and cultural implications and identifying best practices that can support the growth and preservation of indigenous crafts (Hassan, 2024).

Statement of the problem

Despite various government initiatives aimed at supporting traditional craft industries in Kano State, many artisans continue to face significant challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, limited market access, and technological stagnation. Existing policies often fall short of providing the necessary support, resulting in unsustainable practices and economic difficulties for traditional crafts. This study seeks to critically examine the gap between policy intentions and practical outcomes, thereby identifying key issues that need to be addressed to foster a more supportive environment for indigenous craft industries (Bello, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

To evaluate the impact of government policies on the sustainability of traditional craft industries in Kano State.

To identify challenges that hinder effective policy implementation in the craft sector.

To recommend improvements to government policies to better support traditional crafts.

Research questions

How do government policies affect traditional craft industries in Kano State?

What challenges do artisans face due to current policy shortcomings?

What policy modifications can enhance the sustainability and growth of traditional craft industries?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it provides an in-depth evaluation of the role of government policies in shaping traditional craft industries. The insights will assist policymakers, industry stakeholders, and community leaders in developing more effective strategies that ensure economic viability and cultural preservation, thereby benefiting the artisan community (Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study

This study is limited to traditional craft industries in Kano State and focuses exclusively on government policy impacts. It does not address global market dynamics or non-policy-related factors. Limitations include variability in policy implementation and potential biases in artisan feedback.
